Counselling Services
Counselling Many Rivers offers counselling for individuals, couples, families and groups. Your first appointment provides the opportunity to discuss counselling options and to answer questions and concerns. This is a good time to discuss special requests, expectations and talk about personal supports and resources. You and your counsellor will determine a plan of service. You will be advised of other services that might be of interest to you. Services may not be available immediately, and you will be advised of any waiting period.
Many Rivers is not an emergency service, but will provide support during office hours. Please ask your counsellor for a list of emergency support services outside our office.
If you find yourself in an emergency situation please check here for numbers to call - Emergency Numbers.
Process Counselling is arranged by phoning one of our 4 offices.
Confidentiality
Services are confidential. Information about clients is not shared with, or requested from, other agencies unless the client gives permission in writing. The agency's policy is to report instances of child abuse, or situations where a child or others are at risk of abuse.
Counselling is available for children and youth. The counselors will judge whether or not to contact the child's parents. Parents are usually invited to participate in some or all of the counselling.
Who are the counsellors?
Our counselling staff have degrees in counselling, nursing, social work, education, and/or psychology. Areas of study include: counselling, family studies, marriage and family therapy, group work, adult education and child and community development. All counselling staff are qualified with a Bachelors or Masters in a related field such as Social Work, Psychology or Marriage and Family Therapy. Please ask your counsellor about his/her training and experience.
Fees
Many Rivers is a private, non-profit agency and client fees are an important source of its funding. Due to a financial contribution from Yukon Government, counselling fees are subsidized according to a sliding scale fee schedule. Client fees are based on family income and the number of persons supported by that income. Fees range from $30.00 to $100.00 per hour. For people with a family income below $40,000, their fee is automatically assessed at $0. The fee charged for counselling covers: maintaining your file, telephone contact with you or with other professionals at your request. We will never deny services just because someone is not able to pay. Please discuss your individual needs and concerns regarding fees with our staff.

Frequently asked questions:
What does the counsellor do?
You and your counsellor will develop plans for your counselling, and will periodically review your progress during counselling. You may be seen as an individual, a couple, a family or in a group. Please be sure to speak out about what you want from counselling. It is your counsellor's responsibility to discuss with you the advantages, disadvantages and possible alternatives to counselling. Your counsellor will answer any questions or concerns you may have.
What if there are problems? If I don't like my counsellor? If it isn't helping?
You have the right to stop counselling at any time you wish. We would recommend that you discuss this with your counselor first, but that is your choice. We would also encourage you to discuss any concerns or complaints you may have regarding your counselling with your counsellor-many times problems can be resolved. Both male and female counsellors are available if this is a particular concern for you. If for some reason you cannot address your concern or complaint with your counsellor, please contact the Clinical Supervisor or the Executive Director, Marilyn Wolovick at 667-2970.
