News Release For Immediate Release June 5, 2009
Many Rivers Counselling and Support Services will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the organization’s founding at their AGM on June 18/09. Many Rivers has been working to nourish healthy individuals and families living in supportive communities in Yukon since 1969. Marilyn Wolovick, Executive Director of Many Rivers stated that “This is a significant milestone in our history and we are looking forward to celebrating with all our supporters at the AGM.”
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the agency commissioned a mural for the outside of their Whitehorse office. The mural highlights the beauty of Yukon river landscapes and wildlife. “Rivers are the symbol we adopted for our name change in 2007”, Wolovick explained, “Rivers are a life affirming symbol of hope and a place where people can go to find inspiration and renewal.” A crew of youth worked with local artist Heidi Hehn to develop the concept and image for the mural. Heidi facilitated a series of 4 workshops with the youth and was responsible for the final design. The youth crew transferred the design and painted the image on the mural. Heidi provided the finishing touches. “We are delighted with the process of partnering with Heidi and youth from YOTS and the end result is exceptionally beautiful,” Wolovick expressed.
There will be a show of work by Heidi Hehn and the young, up-and-coming artists at Many Rivers. “Everyone got excited about the idea of a group show”, said Hehn. She explained her enthusiasm for the exhibit, “These young people all have a different style and I find this fascinating because often artists do not achieve an individual style for years. I will be honoured to exhibit next to their paintings and photos. It will make for a very beautiful and exciting show.” The art show will be on display at Many Rivers from June 18-August 18/09.
The Many Rivers mural project is a partnership between Many Rivers and Youth of Today Society. It was funded by Yukon Arts Fund. Many Rivers will hold a dedication ceremony to commemorate the mural at the 40th anniversary AGM at their central office on 4th and Hawkins. The youth artists and Heidi Hehn will be in attendance. Celebrations will begin with an open house and art show starting at 6:30 PM, mural dedication at 7:00 PM followed by a business meeting at 7:15 PM. Refreshments will be served.
