Welcome to the Youth Outreach Program
The Youth Outreach Program serves youth ages 12 -24 years. With specific attention to age-appropriate interventions, our Youth Outreach Counsellors assist youth by providing support, counselling, advocacy, and sharing their skills and knowledge.
What is the Youth Outreach Program?
Our counsellors help youth stabilize their lives and plan for their future. Counselling is available to address a wide variety of issues that youth may be facing. Counsellors provide flexibility with their practise and can meet youth where they are most comfortable.
Our Youth Counsellors are also trained to assist with crisis intervention and the development of safety plans and will travel to various communities in the Yukon.
They also provide family counselling and assist with parent-teen conflict resolution, mediation, parent coaching and support. Our counsellors also provide referrals, advocacy, support and accompaniment when appropriate.
How to Get in Touch
Our Youth Counsellors work out of the Many Rivers Whitehorse office at 4071 4th Avenue.

Our Work in the Community
The Youth Outreach Program also participates with educational activities on youth issues in Whitehorse and in other Yukon communities by request.
Workshops can be provided on various youth issues including: healthy decision making, sexual health, drug and alcohol use, suicide prevention, crime prevention and prevention of violence.
The program also provides support and information to other youth workers and professionals in the Yukon. We are involved as collaborative partners with other organizations and governments in the Yukon.
Meet our Youth Outreach Counsellor!
Michael Knutson, BTH, MSCP
Michael has a masters of science in counselling psychology and is skilled in person centred, cognitive behavioural, motivational interviewing, and existential counselling.
Michael had a personal experience of losing a brother to suicide which motivated him to spend a number of years soul searching, travelling, working, and studying throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America.
Working with youth and adults from a variety of diverse family and cultural backgrounds has given Michael an in-depth understanding of a broad range of psychological issues and challenges of today. Michael has near 10 years experience working with individuals battling depression, anxiety, addictions, and grief as well as helping people work through trauma and major life transitions. Michael has lived in a number of First Nation communities across northern Canada, counselling in schools, in prisons, and on the streets before moving to Whitehorse where he has been a community outreach counsellor for over 5 years.
Michael recognizes that each individual is uniquely shaped in character by a mixture of diverse experiences, and that each individual has the potential to fully understand and creatively fulfill their unique purpose. He is here to assist people to make healthy choices, to engage in healthy relationships, to clarify gifts and strengths and to engage in life while setting positive goals for the future.

Homeless in Whitehorse: A Time for Change
This video was a project created by the Youth Outreach Team to raise community awareness of challenges Whitehorse youth face in the midst of a housing crisis. The project allowed youth and advocates to express frustrations and concerns according to their experiences, as well as suggestions for change. This video was produced locally by Michael Knutson.
Reel Youth Project: Video # 1
Young Women’s Voices was an innovative project run by Many Rivers Counselling and Support Services in 2010 and was designed to give young women in Whitehorse an opportunity to find their voice through creative self-expression, as well as gain support and learn about issues that are important to them.
Reel Youth Project: Video # 2
The Reel Youth Project was coordinated by Jodi Proctor, with support from the Youth Outreach Counselling team.
